Aravind Penmatsa
My early training was in pharmaceutical sciences at Osmania university, as an under-graduate. I subsequently did a PhD with Dr. Yogendra Sharma and Dr. Rajan Sankaranaryanan at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad where I carried out structural and biophysical studies of calcium-binding proteins. My active interest in diverse areas of neuroscience, pharmacology and membrane protein structure led me to Eric Gouaux's lab at the Vollum Institute, OHSU where I worked towards determining the X-ray structure of a neurotransmitter transporter, a dopamine transporter from fruit flies.
In my lab at MBU, we look at mechanisms of substrate recognition, transport and inhibition of ion-coupled integral membrane transporters through structural, biochemical and biophysical approaches. (CV for more details)

I did my B.Sc. in biochemistry and chemistry from RML Awadh University, Faizabad. At IISc, I am enrolled as an integrated PhD student in biological sciences. I joined this lab in May 2017. I am currently working on characterization of some secondary active transporters, and with the aid of my labmates, I am trying to decipher their roles using some biophysical and biochemical techniques.

I did my Integrated BS-MS dual degree with specialization in Structural biology from National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar. My interest in the field of structural biology, specifically on channels and transporters led me to join Dr Penmatsa's lab in 2018 as a PhD student. Here I will be working on structural and biochemical characterization of secondary active transporters.

I am an India Alliance early career fellow with the Penmatsa lab. I did my B.Sc(chemistry) from TSR and TBK college and M.Sc (Biochemistry) from Dr. Lankapalli Bullayya College in Andhra University. I subsequently joined Dr. Janesh Kumar's Lab at the National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, Maharashtra as a PhD student, and worked on structural and functional studies of orphan ionotropic glutamate receptors through electro cryomicroscopy. As part of my early career fellowship I am interested in understanding intercellular communication that occurs through specialised membrane proteins that form gap junctions.

I did my Bachelor’s in Life Sciences (2019-2022) from Presidency University, Kolkata. I joined the Penmatsa Lab, MBU in August 2022 as a post-graduate student. For my post-graduate studies, I’ll be exploring the structural and functional aspects of efflux transporters using diverse biochemical and biophysical techniques. Through my studies, I intend to find how efflux transporters contribute to multi-drug resistance.
